Style Tips From Stacy London
- The most universally flattering fit is a mid-rise, mid-width straight or narrow boot leg with a uniform dark wash and a thicker waistband to lock and load the mid-section!
- Fit the largest part of your body first and tailor from there.
- The most important fit factor is the RISE. Be sure to find a good fit for YOUR waist.
- A common style pitfall for an apple shaped woman is wearing a jean that is too low in the rise. If the waistband of the jean sits too low, the tummy spills out over the top of the pant. Not a good look. Keep the muffin in the pan, ladies!
- Consider fit in tummy, booty, hip and thigh: these are the biggest trouble spots for women. Look for jeans with a tummy panel to control the tummy area. Look for good pocket shape and placement for booty. Look for jeans with stretch for hip and thigh.
- Any jean too low in the rise will accentuate a muffin top. But if you wear a higher rise, you can look dated. Look for MID-RISE jeans for the MOST FLATTERING fit and the most modern and relevant silhouette!
- Women with bigger booties tend to struggle to find jeans that fit in both the rear and the waist. What style jeans can circumvent the gaping at the waist? Be careful here. Jeans need to be tailored if they gap at the waist. If you are fitted on the bottom half of your body AND you find jeans that fit you both in the waist and the hip, you will be wearing jeans with a very dated looking silhouette: a very high rise = MOM JEANS. Instead look for a no gap banded waist that sits about an 1 1/2 BELOW your natural waist line. And nip them in if necessary!
- Severe boot cuts and tapered skinny jeans only accentuate a heavier bottom half. Avoid these cuts. Look for wider, straighter leg (i.e. trouser jeans) for the most slimming effect and longest, leanest body line.
- What denim details can slim or minimize a bigger butt? Pockets can affect the way your bottom is perceived. Look for angled pockets or angled stitching on pockets to create a slimming effect, but watch out for over sized or three-dimensional pockets, or heavily embellished ones as these will only emphasize that area.
- What details and cuts should women who want to minimize wide hips or bigger thighs look for? Look for a wider leg. Not SO wide as to be a flare leg but wide enough to create a long line from the widest part of you straight down. The tighter the leg, the more evident your hip and thigh will look in the jean!
- Denim is the most versatile fabric for style: dress it up or down.
- A darker, consistent wash, no bleaching or whiskering is most flattering and versatile.
- Look for best overall fit, but jeans CAN be tailored.
- If you find a great fitting jean, always buy two pair: one to hem for wearing with flats and one to hem for wearing with heels.
- Always hem jeans with SAME thread and stitching they came with. Just ask your tailor to match.
- Don't wear a style that doesn't suit you just because it's trendy. Find YOUR fit and you will always look stylish.
